Awning modifications

Making awnings larger to fit a bigger caravan

When you upgrade your caravan to a bigger model you don't necessarily need to upgrade your awning too. It is in some cases possible to modify your awning to fit your new caravan as our forum members have recently discussed.

Gordon: It's perfectly feasible to enlarge an awning. This is achieved by inserting an extra triangle of material into the roof section (usually one at each end) to increase the length of the awning rail side. A new rail beading is then attached for the full length.

The length of the front is unaltered so the result is a trapezoidal awning. There are many companies offering to make these alterations at a reasonable cost, but you may start by looking at the Canvas Repair Centre in Burton on Trent or East Yorkshire Awning & Tent Repairs in Hull.

hitched_up: We had this done using the Canvas Repair Centre and can't praise highly enough the job they did, even down to collecting and returning the awning. From memory it was all done and dusted in about four days. Be aware though, we were advised that this mod is only possible up to 1 metre, so whether you'll be able to squeeze the extra 20cm I'm not sure.

pete.b: We have had numerous awnings altered over the years, all done by the Canvas Repair Centre, Burton on Trent. Luckily I only live a few miles away so was able to deliver and collect myself. However, if you ring them they will arrange collection and return delivery of your awning for you.

Coachman: Leicester Caravan centre alters awnings.

spursboy61: I had an awning repaired in Gwent Camping & Awnings, Newport, (01633 211403). Don't know if they do postal work though. Try asking at your local awning or camping sales places, they should know someone.
iank: We were in the same predicament and as it is over a 120 cm it is not a viable option. You will need to buy a new awning.
